In offering design studios that highlight sustainable issues, it is important to address concepts of technical compliance and material science through which sustainable issues are framed. However such knowledge must also be accompanied with ways of thinking about the subject matter that engages the interest and imagination of the students involved.

To address issues of sustainable lifestyles it is important to recognise that such aspirations are in direct conflict with the juggernaut of popular culture and the endless media marketing cycle that implores the populations of affluent countries to consume at all costs. In this case before a design education can address the mechanics of a sustainable lifestyle it is imperative to interrogate the drives and desires, needs and wants of contemporary consumer society.
